Just curious, what are the issues Republicans are strategically bending to Democrats on in order to be regularly viable in liberal states?

http://www.ontheissues.org/Social/Mark_Kirk_Abortion.htm

This was Illinois Republican senator before Duckworth. 100% rating by NARAL.

And thats how they got a republican senator in Obamas old seat. I feel like we should be doing the same, and running candidates that can actually win in every state. Punt on abortion and 2nd amendment in the south, but run up numbers in blue and purple states so that isnt even an issue.

They're starting to bend on same sex marriage in some areas.

Gay rights have absolutely started swinging towards the dems over the past decade.

Abortion has remained relatively stagnant for quite some time, unfortunately.

Oh, I totally agree. But in my opinion we should just punt on the second amendment in those states as well. Run anti abortion, pro gun candidates throughout the south. Accept the fact they wont vote with you on those issues, and settle with them agreeing with you half than time rather than none of the time.

Essentially, I want Manchin to be the norm for southern candidates rather than the exception. Those states are going to be anti abortion, pro gun regardless if a republican wins. And I think wed have a great shot of actually being competitive across the south if we punted on certain social issues in the south and ensured we got good progressive candidates in states open to that. I know it sucks, but we simply arent converting these states on the issue of abortion any time soon. Its not ideal, obviously, but I think itd give us the best chance from a practical standpoint.

I think if you have to abandon as simple a human rights issue as abortion, you're pretty much done as a respectable political party. This might be a pretty realistic strategy but it's not worth it.

I understand, but then the issue is we can sit around feeling morally superior while we get thrashed in senate elections in 10+ states because we refuse to run candidates that would win.

We arent abandoning abortion. We get pro choice candidates through blue and purple states. Nationally, more people in the US support abortion than oppose it but that is absolutely not the case across the south. We just wont win in Mississippi or Alabama with a pro choice candidate considering 50% of the voters there are evangelicals and they wont vote for a pro choice candidate. Practically, it is tantamount to conceding the race before it begins. And I think most democrats would understand from a logical perspective it is better to have someone agree with you 70% of the time instead of 0%.

Gonna disagree with you though in that Republicans will find another dealbreaker if it's not for abortion. Say if it's a standard Democrat who's against abortion but the rest is pretty standard...you better believe the south is still going to go hard against this candidate over the 2nd Amendment.

Also, we've seen abortion lies and exaggerations already with Doug and Hillary, accusing them of wanting to legalize late-term abortions like up until birth. There's no way abortion's not getting tied to these candidates in some way, even if it's code like "Pelosi puppets."

I do think it's time Democrats and Republicans meet in the middle about sex education. If they can come to terms about something as simple as a basic uniform course on what nationally needs to be covered in sex education, then that can do a lot of good including lowering the rate of unwanted pregnancies. While we're in the height of this #metoo movement too, that could help a lot with consent.

Compromises on abortion ain't about to happen and debates about how young to teach them about sex or genders or whatever will still happen, but this seems like the direction to me for more likely compromises. You just gotta hope that matters to people looking to vote based on life/choice.

Some additional good news for Dems in 2018 (so far): they have a terrible map, true, but strangely enough most of the "vulnerable" Dems are actually popular in their state, with some being very popular.

https://morningconsult.com/2017/10/31/how-voters-view-2018s-most-vulnerable-senators-a-year-out/

This is from a month ago now (and the polls are a bit older than that), but a lot of those numbers are encouraging. From Trump states:

Bill Nelson (FL) +24
Heidi Heitkamp (ND) +23
Joe Donnelly (IN) + 21
Jon Tester (MT) +20
Sherrod Brown (OH) +19
Joe Machin (WV) + 17
Bob Casey (PA) +11
Debbie Stabenow (MI) +9

I mean obviously a lot of those are in some very tough states, but those are great/extraordinary numbers, plus this is likely to be a democrat year if the partisan split remains the same going forward. The only two senators listed as vulnerable that don't have a net positive at the moment are Bob Menendez (-9) and Republican Dean Heller (+0).

It's a very bad map and I still would not be surprised if Republicans wound up gaining seats, but it isn't as bad as it could be.

I was thinking the other day, how much would Doug Jones have won by if he was anti abortion? 10%? 20%? That seems to always be the main sticking point for southern voters when it comes to democrats.

I think the Democratic Party would be very smart if they just starting running anti abortion candidates in the south. Most of the time you aren't going to win Alabama, Mississippi, Kentucky, etc if you have a pro choice candidate because so many people are single issue voters in these states. I'm not saying that they should abandon this principal entirely, and obviously you run pro choice candidates in California/Illinois/NY/etc and even in purples states like Pennsylvania and Ohio because they can win there. But you put a pro choice name on the ticket and there's like 10-15 states you're going to lose automatically barring an actual pedophile showing up and saying weird things about little girls in their yearbooks.

Right now Democrats have a huge generic advantage, and I really think they could take advantage of that even if the south if they found the right kind of democrat. Get a person that agrees with you on...50-75% of the issues and run them in Mississippi. They'd have a better chance and that's better than the 0% you're going to get if a Republican wins.

BUSINESS INSIDER - It looks like Alabama violated federal law with its 'inactive voter' scheme

Stuart Naifeh, a voting rights attorney at Demos, told me that, under the federal National Voter Registration Act, states cannot begin to remove voters from the rolls without some initial indication-such as bounced mail-that they have changed addresses.

To put it another way: If Alabama is listing voters as inactive because they didn't respond to one or both postcards-but neither was returned to sender-it is probably breaking federal law.

http://www.businessinsider.com/alabama-possibly-violated-federal-law-with-voter-plan-2017-12

Between this and getting the right to delete voting records at the last minute, it's easy to say fuck Alabama -- so I will -- but also don't forget about how other states suppress the vote in future elections either. Keep up the good fight.

And yet Roy Moore still lost.

Trump also had two huge cubes formed out of stacks of paper, and connected red tape between the two cubes so he could take scissors up to it and literally cut through the red tape of bureaucracy.

**TL;DR**

A pathological liar, who has a history of arson and insurance fraud, starts a church known for its guns, tattoos, rock'n roll and booze, gets cited at three separate instances for unlicensed alcohol sale in a church, is found guilty and fined for it, as well as there being numerous reports of underage drinking, and lewd behavior from Dan Johnson himself with other young women there. A 17 year old girl who has known Dan Johnson since she was 9 years old is molested by the very same person she once considered "a second dad". After months of therapy, she tells parents and they press charges. Police butcher investigation like the morons they are. Case is closed without even interviewing the pastor in the first place.

The pastor runs for office and wins.

After 3 1/2 years ofjournlists hounding the police department, the police finally calls back and asks if they want to re-open the investigation, which they do.

2017 incoming, people are coming forward with stories of sexual assault from celebrities and politicians all over the place, and this story finally gains traction in mainstream media.

Johnson yells "FAKE NEWS, FAKE NEWS, IT'S A LIBERAL/SATANIC PLOT TO OVERTHROW ALL REPUBLICANS IN CONGRESS", and commits suicide. Because he's innocent.

Sorry Dan Johnson. I'm not convinced.

* State and local Alcoholic Beverage Control officers cited Johnson and the church **three times between 2008 and 2015 for unlicensed alcohol sales.** Here's the [video](
) of his trial, and be basically argues that the alcohol served constitutes "communion" (I fucking kid you not). He was found guilty.
* There were often reports of underage drinking during these church parties. One woman, Danielle Elmore, who was underage at the time at considered herself a regular, **and recalls feeling uncomfortable when a boozy Johnson would sometimes kiss her and other young women on the lips.**

So his church is actually a Drug, Sex, and Rock n' Roll club, with a pinch of pedophilia. That's interesting.

And now to the actual woman, Maranda Richmond, who says she was molested by Dan Johnson:

* She's not some random woman, inventing a story to defame a Republican, or to get fame and glory herself, but is a family friend of Dan Johnson (one of his friend's daughter's, and his own daughter's best friend), and has known Johnson since she was 9 years old (she's 21 now), and always considered him "a second dad". ***She pressed charges before he even ran for office.***
* In her teenage years she would often sleep over at the church, and "get into teenage hijinks and drink booze". **She says sometimes Johnson and the adults would fix the drinks for them.**
* After the 2012 New Year's party ended, Johnson, already wasted, headed to a local pub. Maranda stayed all night with Sarah (Johnson's daughter). **She woke up with Johnson on top of her, stroking her arm, sliding his hands under her shirt and bra, groping her, sticking his tongue inside her mouth, then forced his hands down her pants, penetrating her vagina with his finger. She tried to force him off, begging him to stop, but Johnson said she'll like it and kept going**. Eventually, after much pleading and begging, he stopped and went away.
* She never went back and cut all ties with him. He sent a half-assed apology in a [facebook message](https://popesite-assets.s3.amazonaws.com/ media/uploads/2017/12/10/pope_fb_complete_message_string.jpg), claiming he don't remember anything, because T.K.'s (the club he went to the night before) must have drugged him, but he's sorry if he hurt her feelings.
* She started going to therapy the months after and struggled with what had happened. She had trusted the pastor, looked up to him, seen him as a father figure, and she felt devastated.
* roughly six months after the New Year's party, Maranda finally tells her parents, and they all head to the police to press charges. Again, this was months before Dan Johnson EVEN RAN FOR OFFICE.

So what happened to the investigation?

Apparently, **the detective in charge botched the investigation.**

* She reviewed the case under the wrong criminal classification (a misdemeanor instead of a felony).
* **She didn't even interview or question Dan Johnson once.**
* Closed the case saying Maranda Richmond changed her mind about pressing charging, something the whole family denies. The detective has since retired from the department and has refused to comment on the case.
* The investigation didn't re-open until another 3 and a half years, after years of journalists insistent inquiries about the case. A detected at the police station called Maranda and asked if she was satisfied by the investigation. She said she wasn't. The detective asked if she wanted to re-open the case again. She said yes.

And in the midst of this 2017 happens, and people are coming forward in droves about their stories of sexual assaults by celebrities and politics, and this story finally gains traction in mainstream media - one side believing her, the other side yelling fake news.

Then Dan Johnson commits suicide.

So I found this very useful summary on reddit summarizing the super crazy story of the suicide by the Kentucky politician. Its even weirder than I thought.

First they're providing some background information about Dan Johnson's character. What sort of person he is.

* Dan Johnson claimed to have **literally cured the blind and raised people from the dead**, as well as other miracles (link to letter [1](http://www.heartoffirepopeshouse.com/letter1.jpg) and [2](http://www.heartoffirepopeshouse.com/letter2.jpg) on *their own website*)
* Claimed to have been an ambassador to the United Nations, something the UN itself can't find any records of.
* Claimed to have a Ph.d from Kingsway University and Theological Seminary in Des Moines, something the school itself denies.
* Claimed to have served as a White House Chaplain under George H.W Bush, Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, which is incorrect since that position doesn't even exist.
* Claimed to have set up "safe zones" during the 1992 Los Angeles riots. There were no mentions of Dan's feats in the media coverage, and no one at the scene can even recall any "safe zones" to begin with.
* Claimed to have been at Ground Zero during 9/11, and personally set up a morgue near the rubble where he, for two heinous weeks, performed last rites for all those that were pulled from the towers. No one who actually was at the scene remembers Dan Johnson.

Sounds like a pathological liar. Interesting.

But that's not all:

* In 1985 he was **indicted by a grand jury for complicity to commit arson, and making a false police report**. Apparently, he had paid two people 200 dollars to set fire to his Cadillac - which needed repairs and he owed more than 10,000 dollars on - so he could collect the insurance money. He lucked in on a six-month pretrial diversion program, however, and the charges were dismissed in 1987.
* In 2000 Dan was suspected of **burning down his church for insurance money**, as the Heart of Fire Church was basically bankrupt. Somebody had forgot to lock the backdoor to the church that night, and the inside was doused with gasoline and set ablaze. A witness stated that a he seen a white Cadillac (Dan owned a white Cadillac) driven by a blonde white guy (Dan was a blonde white guy), pulling out from behind the church at the time. Court records also detail dozens of bounced checks and credit card debts leading up to the fire. No one was charged in the fire, **and the insurance company's lawsuit against Dan was settled**.

So he's an insurance arsonist. Interesting.

And now to his church... which isn't your typical, everyday church to say the least.

* The Heart of Fire Church is a church for *"tattooed, sunburned, gun-toting, leather-wearing biker who might get kicked out of a regular church"*, as evidenced by this nice little [video](
) of the church members sitting around singing Amazing Grace, holding guns and assault weapons.
* Dan Johnson often broke the U.S tax code of supporting, or opposing a specific political candidate during church, but as IRS lacks political flexibility and resources to enforce the law (Congress has imposed limitations on IRS' ability to investigate possible church violations), thus the Heart of Fire Church never lost its tax exempt status.
* Ex-churchgoers also notes sermons "laced with racist and anti-Islam comments", as well as congregants smoking in church.
* Not to mention his Facebook [posts depicting Obama and Michelle as monkeys.](http://wdrb.images.worldnow.com/images/12010490_G.jpg)
* The Church of Fire was notorious for its weekend parties, with **bikers, booze and "occasionally bare breast", as well as being a part-time tattoo parlor.**

The Amy Schumer of like... 2004, maybe? I dunno, he blew up and then got a lot of backlash for "not being funny."

I think both of them are kind of funny. Not my favorite comedians but still entertaining.

But yeah he got roasted much worse than she gets.

It depends where you go.

Schumer is basically target number two on r/the_donald, /pol/, r/imgoingtohellforthis, etc. for female celebrities, and gets all sorts of absolutely horrendous stuff directed her way.

Cook never quite got it as bad as someone like Mencia, but there was definitely a time on Youtube/reddit that expressing even mild enjoyment of him was met with immediate and universal rebuke and mocking.

I'd say Schumer got it much worse. But, at the same time, I feel like Cook did a lot less to earn the hate he got (well, ignoring the sexist stuff that she doesn't deserve at all).

There's a good Bill Simmons podcast with Louis CK as a guest where he talks about contacting Dane and filming that scene. The dialog was 100% written by CK, and Dane initially refused because he didn't want to come across as still bitter about the accusations when, in reality, he felt that he had moved on. CK basically told him "my way or the highway" and that if Dane didn't take the role, he would cast someone else to play him. So Dane agreed and it seems like that helped them make amends.

Wow. So CK was showing his dick to female comedians and being a dick to male comedians.

Okay, briefly departing from the subject of Roy Moore's dumb ass getting beat in a deep red state like Alabama...

I'm JUST giving a shit about this whole Trump/Gillibrand controversy. Reading the tweet...I think that liberals ARE overreacting on this one. Trump is an idiot with no understanding of how quotation marks work, so it LOOKS bad, but I don't think he was actually implying that she's some sort of whore. It's still fucked up that he gets attacked by a group of Democrats and only retaliates against the woman...because of fucking course he does...but that's the extent of it being a bad tweet.

I thought it was particularly dumb because he himself was a big Clinton supporter and turned into a very vocal critic, so he had no standing to criticize her on.

Everyone wins, really. Dems short term, normal GOP long term.

(except bannon and co, which is fine)

If Bannon and co. could just disappear forever, I think everyone would be better off.

Huuuuuuuuge respect for this guy. With margins this narrow and him being as popular as he is, this could've definitely helped.

Yeah conservatives should absolutely be happy, this is a healthy result for them to push back to normalcy. Sure it's a short-term loss but there's no way in hell Alabama doesn't flip back next time around.

Basically, SephyG is right.

^

This is a 100% going back to the Republicans in 3 years.

And it saves them from having to figure out what the hell to do when Moore showed up and they can't just kick him out. Dems would pound literally every single Republican on that in 2018. It would be even rougher for them in what is already going to be a bad cycle for Republicans.

This is great for America, but also really good for the Republican Party imo.

This is beautiful. Jones wins, saves the conservative movement from the alt right. And we get a Senate seat back the when his term is up.

What if Moore runs again?

Then fuck the GOP if they nominate him

I hope you are prepared, because I 100% guarantee Bannon/Trump are going into full on war mode on McConnell and "establishment" (i.e. sane) GOP.

Do you genuinely believe 100% of democrats or democratic leaning people are bad?

They are the same people who bullied and harassed a 23 year old girl into killing herself last week. The same people harassing and making accusations at a 12 year old boy with a deformed face today.

It may not be all, but it's enough. It's why last November was such a joy, to see the absolute worst parts of humanity be so distraught was worth it.

I didn't care much about this race until today because I stay out of politics for the most part. But the Keaton Jones thing got me really fired up this morning so here we are.

That was a fraction of a fraction of the left. A fraction of a fraction.

There are just as many bad people on the right. You can't judge an entire group by its worst examples. (Which, coincidentally, Roy Moore is literally one of the worst examples of "the right" we've seen in modern politics. If you're a conservative, you should be happy he's gone.)

How good does Shelby, Flake, etc. look now?

Didn't sell their soul, and could reclaim the movement.

Going back to Corrik's earlier point, 538 and CNN have almost converged at this point. Still off slightly, though.

I have no idea where the earlier discrepancy was coming from.

Sad. The people who will be happy about this do not deserve to be happy. They are awful.

This is a very sad way to live your life.

What percentage of people that would be happy about Moore winning would you consider awful?

Jones has taken the gambling lead

I don't know who recommended this site to me, but I need to thank them!

This has been fluctuating between dead even and like 70/30 Moore based on updates and it is very easy to dump a chunk of your "investments" and reinvest when it gets down to 50/50 >_>

I can only hope this goes on another hour.

Next time I know to wait until preliminary results come in. You can probably make a decent amount not really betting on a specific outcome, but taking advantage of the early fluctuations.

Exit poll results are coming in...

On whether the allegations of sexual misconduct against Moore are true or false, Alabamians are nearly evenly divided on Tuesday.

Four in 10 voters say the allegations played an important factor in their vote, while a majority says it was not an important factor. Still, less than 1 in 10 said it was the most important factor in their vote on Tuesday. One in 3 voters said the allegations werent a factor at all.

Almost 9 in 10 supporters of Jones say they believe the sexual misconduct allegations against Moore are true, while 9 in 10 Moore voters say the sexual misconduct allegations are false.

Those actually aren't bad numbers for Jones.

Well 4/10 said it mattered, and you have to assume those voters are going predominantly to Jones. But 55% said it didn't, and you have to assume the majority of those are going to Moore. I'd say those numbers are honestly better for Moore than Jones.
